Bertrand Amboise
Amboise a young protégé of Daniel Chopin-Groffier, has his cellars in
Prémeaux. The wines are remarkable for their outstanding color their
faithfulness to their appellations, and their exceptional richness and
purity. Amboise believes in 100% destemming and like Daniel Chopin, believes
in a cold prefermentation maceration to extract colour and perfume from the
grapes. Just upgraded to premier cru, this small vineyard is a forgotten
appellation, stuck in a backwater between Nuits st Georges and Aloxe Corton.
In fact the slope is an extent ion of the Corton Charlemagne hillside.
Amboise, a railway worker by trade, came to wine making relatively late in
his life by marrying in to a vineyard owning family resented by locals as an
in-comer, he has had to beat them at their own game - and has succeeded. A
big, rich, opulent wine that is way over the basic appellation expectation.
This fully deserves it's premier cru status - yet with it's humble village
price makes fantastic value. The wines of Bertrand Amboise will catapault
this Domaine into the limelight. His wines give every indication of being
capable of aging gracefully.
