Denis Mortet
Denis is a dynamic man, he is thorough and precise. And he laughs a lot. One
can see why he would be unable to work with his younger brother Thierry when
their father retired in 91 and the domaine was split.
He augmented the vineyards that he lost to Thierry by renting five hectares
from a conveniently retiring vigneron in 1993. These were all old vines, and
this adds to the Mortet myth. There are fourteen different wines – and so
not much of any of them.
The cellars are in a new building, nothing special to look at, but the wines
that one tastes there – well that’s another story. They are like no other
wines in the Côte; they are the most concentrated, dark-coloured, exotic,
and powerful wines around. In 2001 he has changed his vinification
techniques & has achieved amazing finesse in the wines.
