Pierre Morey
There are a lot of Moreys about, which makes things rather confusing, but the majority of them hang out in Chassagne Montrachet. This Morey is in Meursault. Pierre’s family used to rent their vines from the Domaine Comte Lafon, and as the leases expired, these vines were given up to the domaine. At the same time Pierre was appointed as wine maker for the Domaine Leflaive – probably the most respected white domaine in the world. Quite an appointment. Domaine Leflaive, like his own small domaine are entirely biodynamically run since ’95.
The wines here are opulent. They have an intensity that is rarely found in Meursault – especially when combined with that magical word ‘balance’. It is the balance that prevents the opulence from becoming ‘blowsy’, so often a problem with lesser Meursault growers, especially in hot vintages such as this where the natural acidity levels are lower than usual.
