Veenwouden
Established in 1988 by international opera singer Deon van der Walt, Veenwouden is a boutique winery, located on the north side of Paarl. The estate has unique subsoils for the area, cool rich ferrous clay which is superb for Merlot & Cabernet Franc in particular. The reputation of the estate is such, that the wines are allocated in South Africa prior to release, much of it bought for investment. The 1997's now sell for 30% more than their release price. Perhaps one of the secrets behind this success is that the Van der Walts have no desire to enlarge the estate. Production stays at 5-6,000 cases, and yields at 4.5-5 tonnes per hectare – a total of only 80 tons.
