Monthélie
The village of Monthélie is quiet, intimate and it would seem that its inhabitants are entirely devoted to the production of wine. This tranquil commune is set back from the main Beaune-Autun road between Volnay and the village of Auxey-Duresses. The east side of the village is a continuation of the Volnay Còte, the soil has a high limestone content and the wines produced are not dissimilar to the wines of Volnay.

Towards Auxey-Duresses the soil becomes less chalky, it is still light in colour but contains argovian marl. The highly revered Les Duresses premier cru on the western side of Monthélie benefits from the clay in this location.

It is at Monthélie that the Burgundy region turns back towards the Haute-Côtes hills.
