Morey-Saint-Denis
Morey has not received the credit or standing that it probably deserves. For many years locals promoted their produce as Gevrey-Chambertin but whenever critics compared the two, Morey was seen as the poor relation and over the years this marketing ploy did more damage than good.  The status of this commune has also suffered from the extension of the village appellation across the main road and the fact that out of 20 premier crus only 3 are larger than 3 hectares. The wines of Morey can be good and do have class but they suffer from the excellent reputation of surrounding villages. The commune is relatively small, only a kilometre from north to south. It has 4 grand crus, of which Clos-de-la-Roche is rated higher than the Clos-Saint-Denis (the village was named after the latter because it sounded better!) 20 premier crus and just over 60 hectares of land producing village wine. From the Monts Luisants vineyard, which reaches 350 metres at the north end of the village, it is sometimes possible to see the top of Mont Blanc.
