Santenay
Santenay is a spa town, a salty spring water spa valued for medicinal
properties including the relief of arthritis and rheumatism.
The area that takes the name of Santenay is actually made up of two villages
a kilometre apart, Santenay-le-Bas and Santenay-le-Haut. The former is
particularly impressive - home to noble mansions, a fourteenth century
fortress and a chapel dating from the 1200s. The latter is a sleepy medieval
hamlet.
The vineyards of Santenay cover 378 hectares, a third of which produce
premier cru wines. Unlike most of the villages in the southern Côte de
Beaune, Santenay produces far less white wine than red, in fact only 10% of
its production is from the Chardonnay grape but when grown in the chalky
clay soil, excellent and fruity white Burgundy is produced. The red wines
are extremely varied but are generally well structured and have a good
length in the mouth.
