Savigny-Lès-Beaune
Despite being one of the largest communes of the Côte-de-Beaune with 383
hectares of vines, the village of Savigny is small and unpretentious.
Situated 6km north-west of Beaune half of the Savigny-lès-Beaune vineyard is
on the south facing slopes of the Bois Noël. The soil has a high clay
content making it quite impermeable. The other half of the vineyard faces
north-east down the side of Mont Battois, joining up with the vines of
Beaune. The soil of Mont Battois is sandier with a limestone shingle on the
flattish land of the lower slopes.
The wines produced on the Bois Noël are lighter and more refined than the
earthier tones of those from Mont Battois. The small amount of white
Burgundy that is produced has an individual character due to the pinot
grapes that are planted in the area. They are extremely good and as with all
the Savigny wines they are relatively inexpensive.
The village itself has some interesting historical sites including the Abbey
of Sainte-Marguerite near Bouilland built in the 11th Century by the
Augustine monks, the 17th century château in Savigny itself which now serves
as a museum for old cars and remnants of the Roman road between Autun and
Langres can still be found in the area.
